SAMMY SLAMMED HIS TRUCK DOOR shut and gunned the engine, not quite sure why he was so fired up. He felt as if he’d done something terribly wrong. He imagined this is what it might feel like if he’d cheated on his wife. He felt dirty and lower than pond scum and pissed off for feeling that way because he was innocent.

And what the hell kind of game was Aubrey’s sister playing? Clearly, she’d realized that he thought she was Aubrey and had had fun at his expense. Twins. He had no one to blame but himself for not remembering that Aubrey was a twin. Like the world needed another Aubrey Rose. He didn’t even know her sister’s name. Damn, he’d been played. How often did that happen? All of about—hmm, never. Sure it sucked and it was humiliating but what really bit him in the ass about the whole thing was…he’d wanted to kiss Aubrey. He’d thought he was kissing Aubrey. So where’d that leave him? Confused. Irritated. And oddly tuned up, tense as a bowstring, wishing he could walk back into that bar and grab the real Aubrey to rectify the situation.

Her sister had been hot but Aubrey—the real deal—had been sexy as hell. Especially when the fire had lit up her eyes. If he’d been made of paper, he’d have been a pile of ash. What was wrong with him? He didn’t want a woman with a temper—someone who was territorial and possessive—he wanted easy, complacent…a good-time girl who liked a good tumble and didn’t stick around for too much cuddle time afterward. Quick and dirty was fine with him, so was long and sweaty, but in the end, he wanted no attachments. He couldn’t have that with Aubrey. She’d never even consider a quick fling with him and he knew that for a certainty even if he knew nothing more.

And he realized he respected that about her. It reminded him of someone else and his heart contracted painfully. Dana had been like that. Solid, chock-full of integrity and values in spite of her rough upbringing. He’d loved that about her. Sammy inhaled a sharp breath and let it out slowly as the grief he carried with him on a daily basis intensified.

Aubrey…was so off-limits. No matter what. His heart could only take so much. And he’d just about reached that mark.
